4 Mistakes Not to Make When Packing for Your Office Move to Oklahoma City06/18/2018by Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group Boxing up your office sounds like an easy undertaking, doesn't it? Especially if you are a decently uncluttered person, it looks like all you would need to do is tuck your files in a box, your computer, monitor and mouse in another, load up your desk, and you’re off and running. Unfortunately, getting your office from here to there is often quite a bit more time consuming than we would like to imagine it is. Luckily, dodging these frequent errors when it is time to box up your office can save you a decent amount of worry when moving to Oklahoma City. Mistake #1: Not Enough Organization Whether you are planning to move yourself or have found a moving company to take care of your move, the worst thing you can do when it's time to pack up is begin without being suitably organized. You might think you are organized because you wrote a lonely item description on the side of the box, but what you should do is prepare in advance what you need to pack and in what order you need to pack it. After that, you must precisely label what is where. Be aware that when you get your boxes loaded up, moved, and to your new business location, you're not going to remember which box holds your keyboard, and which one holds your pens in it. So, record a list on every box of what's in it to escape digging, disorientation, and general hysteria while you get unpacked. Mistake #2: Burying Things You Really Need If you have ever moved your home, you most likely know that notion of unboxing the towels you have not needed in ten years amid unpacking, but not being able to unearth the shampoo and fresh clothes you require for in the morning. An office move can contain a similar problem. That is the reason that you need to pack up the things you aren't going to need right away (such as your tax records from six years ago), and make sure they are placed on the truck first. The items you may need soon (your desk, your computer, your printer, etc.) should all be packed up last so they are the first things you unload off the truck. This process helps curtail your work interruption, and assists you to get right back on the job once you get to your destination. Mistake #3: Not Using a Timeline or a Checklist Moving an office to Oklahoma City is something that usually happens incrementally, which is why it is crucial to use the right tools to understand your progress. You should have a timeline mapped out for how long it will take to box up your stuff, how long it will take to move it, how long it should take to unpack, and then how long it will take to finish setting up. The timeline must have some time in it for problems, and it must be supplemented with a checklist so you can cross off tasks as they are done. If you plan to hire a professional moving company, they will help you with this process. Winging it is not a very good alternative for an office move. Mistake #4: Bringing Stuff You Don't Need to Oklahoma City Moving your office is an opportunity to begin again, and to put your best foot forward. However, a lot of people wind up just taking everything with them, whether or not they really need it. That is why, before you start to think about packing, you should go through all of your stuff in your office and contemplate if it needs to come to the new location. That broken shredder that you replaced and were storing in case you might get it rebuilt? Don't dirty up your new office with it. The stack of old, but still working, routers you kept in the event of an I.T. issue? Well, if they are a few years old, they are probably obsolete. That ream of musty paper that does not fit your printer? Recycle it or give it to an employee for their kiddos to draw on. The more items you can dispose of (including digitizing old records so the paper copies are not needed) the easier your move will be. Moving your office may be a large project, but with a little bit of preparedness and organization, downtime can be at a minimum.
